Prophetic Resolution of the San Remo Conference

One hundred years ago a conference took place in a small coastal city in Italy, called San Remo. All conference attendees fitted in one villa, but the decisions made there had a great impact in history. The conference was attended by the four Principal Allied Powers of World War I, Great Britain, France, Italy and Japan.

The San Remo conference was significant because it gave birth to the current map of the Middle East. Iraq, Syria and Lebanon, as we know them today, were formed there.

It alone would have been a great achievement for one conference, but the resolution made there had a prophetic meaning beyond that.

The resolution made at the San Remo conference opened a door for the people of Israel to return to the land of their fathers, as promised in the Bible.

”Even if you have been banished to the farthest horizon, He will gather you and return you from there. And the LORD your God will bring you into the land your fathers possessed, and you will take possession of it. He will cause you to prosper and multiply more than your fathers. (Deut. 30:4-5 BSB)

Iraq become independent in October 1932, Lebanon in November 1943, and Syria in April 1946.

Britain was given the task of carrying out the prophetic part of the San Remo resolution. It was not a success. During the British mandate in Palestine, the British divided the land, and they did not let the Jewish people in.

Unlike other states born in San Remo, Israel did not receive the state borders according to the San Remo resolution at one time.

It was not until the Six-Day War in June 1967 that the Golan Heights, Judea and Samaria came under Israeli rule, as had already been decided in San Remo.

The Golan Heights were annexed to Israel in 1981, but Judea and Samaria have not yet been officially annexed. The San Remo conference was in the headlines last week, because of the 100th anniversary of the resolution, and now there is an option that Samaria and Judea will also be annexed to Israel.

Interestingly, all the promises God made to Abraham and Jacob regarding the land that would belong to their descendants, were spoken in this area called today Samaria and Judea. The first three of them were spoken by God in Samaria.

When the plans to annex these areas to Israel will materialize, it will also be a step towards full implementation of the resolution made in San Remo 100 years ago.
